Slightly too late for Halloween, but thanks to Lou B here’s a horrific selection of when Public Information Films were just too bleedin’ scary for words, and ran to nearly half an hour, making them mini horror masterpieces, chockablock with onions aplenty. First up is Apaches, a deadly mash-up of Straw Dogs, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Final Destination and Minipops. Watch from between your fingers.
Apaches did the rounds with the slightly odd-titled Building Sites Bite, which is effective both in keeping kids out of trouble and possibly triggering a building labourer shortage 20 years down the line.
The next film is The Finishing Line, a graphic and macabre depiction of the sticky ends you could face down the old railway. An ill-conceived railway line based sports day becomes a bloodbath, a train driver bleeds his eyes out and much much more scaremongering than you could ever hope for. It was never like this round our way.
Don’t have nightmares. This slice of Stiff power pop from the Jesus of Cool himself should help you out. Buy yourself something sweet and Lowedown at Yep Roc records.
