Cathy Dennis has struck again, with the unstoppable Christian-baiting behemoth that is Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl”, following other global lucre-generating earworms such as “Toxic” and “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head”. So now is as good a time as any to post Cathy Dennis by June & the Exit Wounds from 1999’s “a little more Haven Hamilton please”. Despite sounding like a death metal band, June & the Exit Wounds is the work of one man, Todd Fletcher and he’s clearly more likely to tap along to Brian Wilson rather than mosh it up to Metallica.
Cathy Dennis is a lovely, loping, sundrenched ode to the early 90s pop star, that despite the sunny sentiment still has a yearning, scratchy heartbroken undertow. If you like The Pearlfishers, Eric Matthews, Tahiti 80 or any chamberpop stylings, you’re in for a treat and a half.
