David Foster Wallace was found hanged by his wife Karen on Friday, aged only 46. Apparently he struggled with depression for over 20 years, a period that saw him unleash some of the most significant novels and short stories of his generation. Nobody else I’ve read manages to combine humour, intelligence and such a definitively fresh voice so effortlessly and inclusively. To quote Ian Dury, what a waste. A film version of Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is heading for cinemas soon, I hope it serves his memory well.
