Here, first in an informal series of very small things that I derive inordinate amounts of pleasure from that are almost impossible to properly articulate in words. In Tootsie, right at the very end, a cluster of heartbeats away from Stephen Bishop rounding things off very nicely indeed, and Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is trying to explain himself to Julie Nichols (Jessica Lange), and the way he says “We were already… good friends.” There’s something about the way he delivers that line that really does the business.
